UBC-V: Participate in the Walkabout Challenge, Jan 18 – Mar 20

Registration is now open for Walkabout 2016. Walkabout is an annual health and wellbeing challenge from January 18 – March 20, where teams of five compete to cover the distance of a virtual route by keeping track of their steps. Registration is $10 per participant with proceeds going to the Canadian Breast Cancer Foundation.

Healthy relationships key to child well-being: UBC study

Children’s relationships with peers and adults have a greater impact on their well-being than socio-economic status, according to new UBC research. The study, which appears in the Journal of Happiness Studies, investigated the relationship between socio-economic, demographic and social factors, as well as health-related habits and activities.

Okanagan Charter

Design_LabUniversities and colleges put priority on health promotion locally and globally with the Okanagan Charter — a call to action on health and wellbeing. The Okanagan Charter was an outcome of the 2015 International Conference on Health Promoting Universities and Colleges held on the University of British Columbia’s Okanagan campus in Kelowna, Canada on June 22-25. The Charter development process engaged researchers, practitioners, administrators, students and policy makers from 45 countries.

Conversations in Wellbeing with Darryl and Laurie Drummond

Darryl and Laurie Drummond describe wellbeing as the way people live: “It’s everything to do with living well, so access to exercise facilities, healthcare, and social activities in the neighbourhood.”

The Drummonds, who are UBC alumni and graduated with degrees in geological engineering and nursing respectively, have lived in the University Neighbourhoods Association (UNA) for twenty-two years, and have been involved with volunteer opportunities at the UNA.

International Conference on Health Promoting Universities and Colleges: Report Back

On July 24, 2015, a team of UBC grad students led a report back session in the Policy Lab of the Centre for Interactive Research on Sustainability to discuss take-aways from the International Conference on Health Promoting Universities and Colleges. The session was open to anyone interested in learning about the conference and the signing of the Okanagan Charter.

Brendan Chan, Roots on the Roof

If you’ve had a chance to check out the much-anticipated AMS Student Nest, you might know about the rooftop garden on the fourth floor. What you may not know is how this garden came to be.

Brendan Chan, the founder of Roots on the Roof, has been gardening on campus for a year.

“Last year, I got a job at the Orchard Garden, which is currently at Totem Field,” said Chan.
